Taking out a tooth that has to be reached first, usually by lifting the gum.
Where a simple extraction lifts a tooth out, this one gets to it first. The gum is lifted back, a small amount of bone may be removed, and the tooth is often sectioned and taken out in pieces. That sounds worse than it is: it is easier on the socket than pulling harder.
The gum is stitched back afterward.
You leave with written aftercare, a number to ring and painkiller advice. The instruction that matters most is not to rinse on the first day, because that is what disturbs the clot.
Plan on being quiet for the rest of the day, and expect the second day to be worse for swelling than the first.
